The 14th annual Lower Cowichan River clean up is back on Aug. 25
The Cowichan Watershed Board, and Cowichan Tribes are collaborating once again to host the 14th annual Lower Cowichan River (Quw’utsun Sta’lo’) Clean Up on Aug. 25, which will begin at 9:30 a.m., at the Mini Big House located at 5536 River Rd. in Duncan. The Cowichan Watershed Board which co-chaired by Cowichan Tribes and CVRD is a local governance entity that was created in 2010 to promote water and watershed sustainability in the Cowichan and Koksilah watersheds, ancestral home of the Quw’utsun First Nation.
All are welcome to take part in this wonderful opportunity to meet your neighbours, and connect with fellow community members while doing the meaningful work of contributing to the health of our watershed. For the past 14 years near the end of summer this annual event has been removing a substantial amount of garbage from a 15-kilometre stretch of the river which is the heartbeat of our valley. It is the perfect time to do this before we once again see our heavy rainfalls return to wash a deluge of debris, garbage, and pollution downstream. This annual event is not just an important part of our community’s stewardship of the Sta’lo’ (river), but also part of how the salmon are welcomed home.
Volunteers can arrive at 9:30 a.m. to sign and gear up, this will be followed by a warm welcome and breakfast beverages and eats kindly donated by the Duncan Garage Cafe and Bakery. The river clean up will run from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. where volunteers will have the opportunity to clean the riverbanks by foot which include walkers, waders, swimmers, and snorkelers, or for those who choose can also go out by canoe, dinghy, raft, or kayak. After working up an appetite volunteers will be treated to a BBQ lunch, generously cooked by the Duncan Rotary Club.
